Bygg has participated in a tender with Nezzt to design & construct a student housing project for 400 students. The oddity was the plot, which is a triangle, even though it is located totally free in the landscape. The master plan had provided this shape, in order to respect view lines into the landscape from the surrounding buildings of the Utrecht University Campus.

The tender asked for temporary housing for the duration of 15 years. This means we build with modular housing units, that are prefabricated in the factory of Nezzt and than placed on top of each other.

The triangular plot posed a challenge with respect to the modular system, which normally would fit best in any type of rectangular orientation. We proposed to respect the triangle, by building on the plot’s perimeter and having galleries run on the inside courtyard, which is large enough te add an additional block in the middle, with communal functions.
